What is the MVP file format?
An .mvp file is a project file created by MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, a Windows-only consumer video editor. The file acts as a project descriptor: it records the timeline layout, clip references, cut points, transitions, effects settings, titles, and render configuration - but contains no actual video or audio data. All media assets (.mp4, .avi, .wav, and others) are referenced by absolute file paths and must remain at those locations for the project to open correctly.
This path-based design means that moving or renaming source files after saving an .mvp project causes clips to appear as missing when the project is reopened. Copying a project to a new computer requires transferring all referenced media files alongside it.
The format is proprietary to MAGIX AG and is not publicly documented. Compatibility between .mvp versions is limited: files from significantly older releases may require a migration dialog in a newer version, and some settings may not transfer cleanly.
Note that the .mvp extension is also used by the discontinued Serif MoviePlus for its own, completely incompatible project files. MVPstats (a statistics application) uses .mvp for data files - an entirely unrelated use of the same extension.
For long-term archival, MAGIX recommends exporting finished projects to a standard video container rather than relying on the .mvp project file alone, since absolute media paths may break when files are reorganized or storage is changed.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWMVP is a project metadata file, not executable. It poses no inherent security risk. The risk is data loss: if source media files are moved or deleted, the project cannot render. Keep MVP files and their source media together (e.g. in a dedicated project folder).
