What is MTA file?

FIles with .MTA extension store index multimedia file indexing information for given folder shared via Samsung AllShare service. MTA file allow users to navigate the file during playback, for example, selecting movie chapters. MTA is a plain text file format based on XML standard. Such file can contain:

• Chapter information – information about file segments,
• Start time for each segment in seconds,
• Frame preview – JPG thumbnail image encoded using base64.

MTA files are created automatically on given device by AllShare tool. MTA filenames are generated by copying the name of base file and adding .MTA suffix to the file’s original extension. For example, for a file movie.mkv related movie.mkv.mta will be created and saved in the same folder. Samsung AllShare is a multimedia file sharing application that allows users to share data between various devices, including TVs, PCs, smartphones, tablets, or other network-attached devices tha support DLNA standard. How to open file with MTA extension?
