What is the ISMV file format?
An .ismv file is an encoded multimedia adaptive streaming format used with Microsoft IIS Web Server's Smooth Streaming technology. The .ismv file is saved in the Protected Interoperable File Format (PIFF), which is derived from the MPEG-4 ISO Base Media File Format specification. The file is fragmented into short segments - typically two-second fragments, each beginning on a keyframe - and these parts can be streamed at different transfer rates corresponding to different quality levels. The IIS Web Server can host multiple .ismv files (one per bitrate), and the Smooth Streaming technology enables dynamic detection of available bandwidth, streaming the quality level that best fits the connection.
Smooth Streaming uses a companion server manifest (.ism) and client manifest (.ismc) to coordinate multi-bitrate playback. The primary client was Microsoft Silverlight, which reached end-of-life in October 2021. Smooth Streaming is now a legacy format; the industry has standardized on MPEG-DASH and HLS for adaptive streaming. FFmpeg can decode and convert .ismv files, and an .ismv file is structurally a fragmented .mp4 that can be processed by any ISO Base Media File Format-aware tool.

RISK: LOWISMV is a fragmented MP4 video file - passive media data. No known code-execution risk. The only caution: ISMV files from commercial streaming services may be DRM-protected with PlayReady (PIFF encryption), in which case they cannot be played or converted without the DRM license. Stripping DRM is illegal in most jurisdictions.
