What is the INSP file format?
The .insp file is the native still image format produced by Insta360 cameras from Arashi Vision Inc. Despite the custom extension, it is structurally a standard JPEG image - the same FF D8 FF magic bytes appear at the start, and renaming .insp to .jpg lets any image viewer open the file immediately.
What makes .insp distinct is the rich XMP metadata block embedded between the JPEG APP markers. This block uses the GooglePhotoSphere XMP namespace to tag the image as a 360° equirectangular panorama, and adds proprietary Insta360 fields recording camera model, firmware version, GPS coordinates, gyroscope orientation, exposure settings, and per-lens calibration parameters. Insta360 Studio and the Insta360 mobile app use this data to apply stabilization, horizon-leveling, and color processing.
The image content itself is a stitched equirectangular projection: the dual fisheye lenses are merged into a single 2:1 aspect-ratio image. Typical resolutions range from 6080×3040 px (ONE X2) to 9000×4500 px (ONE RS 1-inch 360 Edition).
.insp files are companion stills to .insv video files recorded in the same session. To upload a 360° photo to Facebook, YouTube, or Google Street View, export from Insta360 Studio as a standard equirectangular .jpg with the PhotoSphere XMP preserved.

RISK: LOWJPEG-based image file. Safe to open. No executable code. Standard JPEG parser risks (malformed files) apply but are theoretical.
