FOMOD files are used by programs for editing Fallout (3 and later installments) game files.

Contents of FOMOD files

FOMOD files store data in the form of archives (using 7Z, ZIP or RAR compression). A single archive can contain such data as:

• info.xml files describing edited settings,
• script for running the mod,
• other resources that introduce changes to the base game files.

How can I install FOMOD mods?

The easiest way to install mods in FOMOD files is to open the file by double-clicking them in file browser. The FOMOD file will automatically execute provided that the FOMOD file manager, such as Fallout mod manager (FOMM) or Nexus Mod Manager (NMM), is installed on the machine. After choosing desired options, the program will automatically install mods from the FOMOD file. The mentioned managers, aside from installing mods, are mainly used for creating custom mods, which some users might find unnecessary. For those users there are dedicated mod managers available on the web (such as Vortex), which also can be used to install FOMOD files. They support FOMOD menus, where users can select which modifications they wish to use as well as additional settings such as new items or equipment (armor, accessories, etc.).
