What is the FFF file format?

.fff is Hasselblad's proprietary FlexRaw camera raw format, used by both Flextight film scanners and Hasselblad H- and X-series medium-format digital cameras. The format originated with the Imacon Flextight scanner series around 2000; Hasselblad acquired Imacon in 2004 and continued using .fff across its camera lines.

The file is a TIFF-based binary container - little-endian, with the standard 49 49 2A 00 signature - extended with proprietary Hasselblad MakerNote IFDs. These private tags carry scanner or camera calibration data, ICC profile references, and unprocessed CCD or CMOS sensor data at 16 bits per channel, yielding 48-bit colour after demosaicing. Flextight scanner outputs can exceed 200 MB per scan; the Hasselblad H6D-400C MS multi-shot camera produces files up to 400 MB at 400 megapixels.

Unlike the related .3fr format (used by Hasselblad H-series camera bodies), .fff covers both scanner and camera output. Some camera models write a sidecar .DAT file with the same base name.

LibRaw and dcraw can decode .fff files. Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom support most Hasselblad .fff variants. Hasselblad's own Phocus software provides the deepest metadata access, tethered shooting support, and colour processing pipeline.

Hasselblad FFF is a TIFF-based container with proprietary IFD tags. Standard TIFF signature (II = little-endian, 2A 00 = TIFF magic). Camera-specific metadata is stored in private MakerNote IFDs. Accompanied by a sidecar .3FR (Hasselblad H-series cameras) or .FFF can be the sole file from Flextight scanners. Some camera models produce a companion .DAT sidecar with same base filename.

Frequently asked questions

What is an FFF file?
A raw camera image from a Hasselblad digital camera or Flextight film scanner. It contains unprocessed sensor data and must be 'developed' in software before use.
How do I open an FFF file on Windows?
Download Hasselblad Phocus (free) from hasselblad.com, or open in Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop. Windows Photos may work but has limited raw adjustment capability.
How do I convert FFF to JPEG or TIFF?
Open in Phocus or Lightroom, apply your adjustments, then Export (Phocus) or File → Export (Lightroom) to JPEG or TIFF.
Is FFF the same as 3FR?
Both are Hasselblad raw formats, but they differ. .FFF is the primary format from Flextight scanners and many camera backs; .3FR is produced by Hasselblad H-series camera bodies. Both are TIFF-based.
Why is my FFF file so large?
FFF files store uncompressed 16-bit raw sensor data. A 50 MP shot typically results in 100+ MB; multi-shot capture (H6D-400C MS) can reach 400 MB.
