What is the DRW file format?
The .drw file extension is used by files that store drawings created with several different applications. .drw files use a vector graphics format that represents shapes using lines and curves rather than dots (pixels), keeping them crisp at any output size.
The most well-known origin is Micrografx Designer, a Windows illustration program from the late 1980s, later acquired by Corel Corporation and continued as Corel DESIGNER (now part of the CorelDRAW Technical Suite). These proprietary binary files are built for technical illustration and diagramming work.
An important complication: .drw is not tied to a single program. Several unrelated applications - including PTC Creo for CAD work - also save files with this extension. Because there is no single reliable file signature, identifying the correct software depends on which program created the file; a tool like TrID can help determine the variant.
Related formats include .CDR (CorelDRAW's native format), .AI (Adobe Illustrator), .EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), and .DXF (AutoCAD exchange). Modern open standards have largely displaced .drw in new workflows.
