What is the DIS file format?
A .dis file is a proprietary binary workbook created by Oracle Discoverer, Oracle's business intelligence query and reporting tool for relational databases. The workbook stores the definitions of one or more analytical worksheets: the queries, business area references, column selections, sort orders, parameters, calculations, and display formatting that together define a report.
Oracle Discoverer was first released in 1996 and went through several major versions - 4i, 10g, and 11g - before Oracle ended Extended Support on 30 June 2017. The product is now effectively retired; Oracle directs all remaining users to migrate to Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) or Oracle BI Enterprise Edition (OBIEE).
A .dis file works in conjunction with an End User Layer (EUL) stored in an Oracle database. The workbook references named business areas and objects in that EUL; without a live database connection and a matching EUL, the file cannot retrieve any data and is not independently useful. Workbooks can be exported from Discoverer Desktop via File > Export, producing an .eex (Discoverer Export Exchange) file suitable for re-import into another Discoverer instance.
Because Oracle Discoverer is end-of-life, .dis files represent a migration challenge: their report definitions must be recreated manually or through third-party tools in a modern BI platform, as no automated importer from .dis to OAC or OBIEE currently exists.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWDIS is a proprietary Oracle workbook format containing only query definitions and layout metadata. It cannot execute code and poses no direct security risk. The underlying Oracle SQL queries could in principle be designed to access sensitive data, but that is a database access-control concern, not a file-format vulnerability.
