What is the GSHEET file format?
A .gsheet file is a shortcut to an online spreadsheet created with Google Sheets. The actual spreadsheet data is stored on Google's servers and can be opened or edited only through the Google Sheets web interface. The .gsheet file itself is a small JSON text file - containing keys such as url, doc_id, and email - that Google Drive for desktop places on your local drive to represent the cloud document; double-clicking it opens the linked spreadsheet in your default browser rather than a local application.
In terms of usage and interface, Google Sheets is broadly similar to an .xlsx spreadsheet created by Microsoft Excel, supporting formulas, charts, pivot tables, and real-time collaborative editing. Unlike a .xlsx or .ods file, a .gsheet shortcut contains no actual spreadsheet data and cannot be opened as a standalone document - it is purely a pointer.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .gsheet is a tiny JSON text file with no executable content - opening it is safe. The real considerations are privacy and access, not malware: the file only opens the cloud spreadsheet if you are signed into a Google account that has permission, so sharing the .gsheet itself does not share the spreadsheet (you must share it inside Google Drive). Treat the embedded URL like any link; do not assume a .gsheet gives offline access to anything.
