What is the CSF file format?
.csf files store Adobe Color Settings presets used across the Adobe Creative Cloud application suite. When a designer configures color management in Photoshop's Edit → Color Settings dialog - choosing working spaces for RGB, CMYK, and Grayscale, selecting a color conversion engine such as Adobe ACE, setting a rendering intent, and enabling black point compensation - those choices can be saved as a .csf file.
Once installed in the shared Adobe Color Settings folder, a .csf preset becomes simultaneously available in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat, ensuring consistent color behavior across the entire production workflow. On Windows the default path is %AppData%\Roaming\Adobe\Color\Settings; on macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Settings.
It is important to distinguish .csf files from ICC profiles (.icc or .icm): a .csf file does not define a color profile - it references ICC profiles by name and bundles the policy decisions around how those profiles are applied. The binary format stores data in big-endian byte order and typically occupies 1 KB to 50 KB. Organizations and prepress studios distribute .csf files to standardize color workflows across teams, eliminating manual dialog reconfiguration on each workstation.
