What is the WMZ file format?
The .wmz file format is used by Windows Media Player software. This format stores standard or custom graphical themes and skin files that change the Windows Media Player interface style. A .wmz file is a ZIP-compressed archive - its magic bytes are PK (50 4B 03 04) at offset zero - and it packages all assets needed for a single skin in one bundle.
A .wmz skin comprises two distinct components: one carries graphical data and the other contains scripts written in JScript. The graphical component defines the visual style of Windows Media Player interface elements such as buttons, sliders and display panels. The script component describes the behaviour of each element upon user actions - for example, adding an effect as a result of mouse hover over the element, or triggering playback on click.
Internally, the archive holds a .wms skin-definition file (an XML-like markup format that declares layout and element behaviour), bitmap images for the artwork, and .js JScript files. Because the container is a standard ZIP, renaming .wmz to .zip lets any archive tool list and extract its contents without special software.
The format was developed by Microsoft and introduced with Windows Media Player 7. The registered MIME type is application/x-ms-wmz. Although Windows Media Player is now a legacy application, .wmz skins can still be inspected with tools such as 7-Zip.

RISK: MEDIUMA WMP skin .wmz is a ZIP package that can include JScript executed by the player when the skin is loaded - a known abuse vector - so only install skins from sources you trust. The file itself doesn't run on its own, but applying a malicious skin runs its script inside Windows Media Player. Inspect a suspect .wmz by opening it as a ZIP (7-Zip) before applying it, and keep Windows patched since the legacy player is no longer actively developed.
