What is the CRS file format?
A .crs file is an internal conversion resource used by Corel WordPerfect's document conversion engine. It contains the rules, tables, and formatting maps that WordPerfect's conversion DLLs consult when importing or exporting foreign document formats such as RTF, DOC, HTML, ASCII, and legacy Lotus formats.
.crs files are installed automatically by WordPerfect and reside in the application's program directory. They are not documents - they are binary support files consumed silently at runtime by the conversion subsystem. Ordinary users have no reason to open, edit, or convert a .crs file. Deleting one can break WordPerfect's ability to open or save documents in the corresponding format.
The format dates to the WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows conversion filter system (circa 1991-1993) and has carried forward through all subsequent releases including WordPerfect Office 2021. If a .crs file appears on a system, it was placed there by WordPerfect - the word processor that creates .wpd documents - and should be left in place as part of that installation's conversion support infrastructure.
Note: the .crs extension is also used by unrelated software - including CAD and mapping tools (Curve Shortcut files) and Corel PHOTO-PAINT (Special Effect Filter resources) - so the context of discovery matters when identifying a .crs file.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWCRS files are internal application resources from a commercial vendor (Corel). If they came from a legitimate WordPerfect installation they are safe. A .crs file sent via email or downloaded from an unknown source is unusual and warrants caution, as it could disguise a malicious payload inside an unexpected extension. In normal usage, these files sit in the WordPerfect program directory and are not shared or transferred.
