Why convert OBJ to FBX?
OBJ is a plain-text static mesh format that stores geometry and material references in a separate .mtl file, while .FBX bundles geometry, rigs, animations, and material data in one binary file. Game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine use FBX as their primary import format, so the conversion is usually needed when a pipeline requires FBX input rather than OBJ.
How to convert OBJ to FBX
Blender FREE
Import via File > Import > Wavefront (.obj), then export via File > Export > FBX (.fbx). Choose FBX 7.4 Binary for Unity or Unreal Engine.
Autodesk FBX Converter FREE
Add your .obj, set the destination to FBX, and click Convert - no full 3D editor needed. Note: this legacy tool has not been updated since 2013.
Command line - Assimp CLI
Run assimp export model.obj model.fbx to convert without a GUI.

- Textures are not embedded: OBJ materials reference external images via a
.mtlfile, so you may need to re-link textures in your target application after converting. - Scale mismatch is common - when exporting from Blender for Unity, apply scale before export (Ctrl+A > Scale in Blender) to avoid the mesh appearing 100× too large or small.
- FBX 7.4 Binary is the safe default for Unity 2019+ and Unreal Engine 4/5; use FBX 6.1 ASCII only for older tools.
