What is the VBF file format?
.vbf files are proprietary backup archives created by VersaCheck, a Windows personal finance and check-printing application developed by G7 Productivity Systems, Inc. The format stores a complete backup of VersaCheck data - including check templates, account registers, payees, and bank account information - for safekeeping or migration to a new installation.
Backups are created through VersaCheck's built-in backup function and restored using its dedicated restore function. No third-party tools support the format. Internally, .vbf uses a fixed-field binary structure divided into multiple records, each containing a complete description of a backed-up data item.
The .vbf extension is also used by an entirely different and far more widely known format: Volvo and Ford ECU firmware files (Vehicle Binary Files) used for flashing automotive engine control units. When encountering a .vbf file, identifying the originating software before attempting to open it is important, as the two formats are completely unrelated.
Typical VersaCheck .vbf file sizes are modest - generally under 50 MB - reflecting the compact data footprint of personal finance records.
