What is the TBL file format?
.tbl files are used for storing tabular data - most commonly as rows of records separated by line breaks, with fields delimited by a tab, comma, or space character. A typical .tbl file contains a plain-text table that can be imported into a script or application, for example a database migration script or a game asset loader. .tbl is not a standardized format, but the most commonly found .tbl files resemble a TSV or CSV in structure, making them readable in any text editor or spreadsheet application. Some tools do use XML markup or HTML to define table layouts, and .tbl files in those cases serve as template files for generating base tables. Such templates are easily reused and make code more abstract and easier to change.
.tbl files are not standardized. How and when they are used depends on the producing application - common examples include game data tables (StarCraft unit definitions), CAD lookup tables (Pro/ENGINEER), and general database seed files. Because the .tbl extension is shared by roughly twenty unrelated programs, the safest way to identify a file is to check which application created it. For generic tabular data, modern formats like .csv or .tsv offer wider interoperability, but external .tbl files remain a convenient, code-free approach to maintaining structured project data.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA generic text .tbl is plain data with no executable content, so it is low-risk to open and inspect in a text editor. The only caution is the usual one for delimited data: when importing into a spreadsheet, be wary of fields that begin with '=', '+', '-' or '@', which Excel can interpret as formulas (CSV/formula-injection). Program-specific binary .tbl files are only as safe as their source application's data; open unknown ones with care.
