What is the STX file format?
.stx is a project file associated with Pinnacle Studio video editing software. .stx files store project settings and references to external resources such as video files, photos, and audio tracks. They do not embed the actual media data - instead they reference files by path. .stx files are saved by default in the same folder as the rest of the project's companion files, and the .scn (scene) and .stu (title) files must remain alongside for the project to open correctly.
Pinnacle Studio
The program offers the standard GUI layout shared by many similar video editing tools. Along the bottom of the workspace a timeline is located; a preview window occupies the right side, and a toolbar panel sits on the left. Pinnacle Studio was developed by Pinnacle Systems (acquired by Avid in 2005; the consumer line was sold to Corel in 2012). The main features of Pinnacle Studio include:
- Rich library of predefined effects and transitions,
- Capability of editing multiple video tracks simultaneously,
- Support for multi-camera editing,
- Split-screen video,
- Advanced color editor,
- Stop-motion editing.
The .stx format was used through Pinnacle Studio v15. From Pinnacle Studio 16 onward (Corel, ~2012), it was replaced by the .axp project format. Recent versions of Pinnacle Studio can still open .stx files for conversion, but saving back to .stx is no longer supported.
