What is the AXP file format?
An .axp file is an audio CD compilation project saved by CDBurnerXP, a free disc-burning application for Windows developed by Canneverbe Limited. The file stores the track layout for a planned audio CD burn session but contains no audio data itself - only references to source files.
Internally, .axp files are plain XML documents beginning with the standard <?xml version= declaration. The root <layout> element contains a <compilation> block with disc-level metadata - title, creation date, and total duration - followed by individual <track> child elements. Each <track> entry records the track number, title, artist, duration in milliseconds, and the absolute file path to the source audio file on disk.
Because an .axp file stores references by absolute path rather than embedding audio, moving or renaming the source files will break the compilation. CDBurnerXP will report missing tracks when the project is reopened.
CDBurnerXP uses the related .cdbp extension for data disc compilations; .axp is specific to audio CD projects. Although the XML structure is readable in any text editor, the file is only functionally useful within CDBurnerXP itself. File sizes are small - typically 1 KB to 20 KB - since they contain only metadata and file path references.
