What is the PWD file format?
.pwd is a text document format associated with Pocket Word, the word-processing application included with Microsoft Windows CE handheld devices. The .pwd format is similar to .DOC but with fewer features and limited functionality - Pocket Word supported text and basic character and paragraph formatting, but not headers, footers, footnotes or captions.
.pwd files use Microsoft OLE2 Compound File Binary structured storage, the same container family as desktop .doc files. Documents synced to a desktop PC via ActiveSync were typically converted to standard .doc automatically. Opening a .pwd directly on a modern desktop requires a compatible application such as LibreOffice Writer or SoftMaker TextMaker; older versions of Microsoft Word may also handle them.
Microsoft developed Windows CE as an operating system for PDA devices that quickly evolved into a complete real-time operating system. Windows CE is used in such devices as car navigation systems and on-board computers as an embedded system. The .pwd extension dates from the earliest Windows CE releases (circa 1996-1997); later Windows CE and Pocket PC releases switched to .psw and then .pwi as the Pocket Word format was updated across the platform's lifespan.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA genuine Pocket Word .pwd is a small data document; opening it in LibreOffice or Word is low-risk. As an OLE2 file it could in theory carry an embedded object, but Pocket Word did not support macros, so practical malware risk is minimal. The main pitfall is misidentification: if your .pwd came from a password manager or a PowerWorld simulation it is not a document and should only be handled by the application that created it. Avoid random 'free PWD viewer' websites - many are PUP/adware traps; use LibreOffice instead.
