.PRD

PRD File

SoftMaker Presentations Document
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

A PRD file is a slide deck made by SoftMaker Presentations, part of SoftMaker Office. Open it with SoftMaker Presentations or the free FreeOffice. To share widely, export to PowerPoint (.pptx) or PDF from within the same app. Note that .prd is also used by old MS Word for DOS printer drivers and the Lode Runner game - the right tool depends on where the file came from.

What is the PRD file format?

.prd is a multimedia presentation file associated with the Presentations application developed by SoftMaker Software GmbH. Each presentation document comprises slides with added transition effects. Each slide can be composed of text data, images, audio or video files, or other visual data. A finished presentation can be saved as:

  • a document file (.PDF, .HTML),
  • an image (.JPG, .PNG, .BMP, .TIF),
  • a video (.MP4, .WMV).

The Presentations application closely resembles Microsoft PowerPoint, both visually and functionally. PowerPoint uses the .PPT format for saving presentations, while Presentations uses .PRD. Both formats evolved into more modern versions - .PPTX for PowerPoint and .PRS for SoftMaker Presentations, respectively. The older .prd format remains supported for opening existing files. SoftMaker Office is also licensed to Ashampoo as Ashampoo Office, which opens .prd files using the same Presentations engine.

Security & safety

RISK: LOW

A SoftMaker .prd is a document, not an executable, so it is low risk to open in SoftMaker/FreeOffice. As with any office document it could embed images or objects, so keep the software updated and obtain files from trusted sources. Download SoftMaker FreeOffice only from softmaker.com/freeoffice.com - avoid third-party "PRD opener" portals that bundle adware. If your .prd is actually an old printer-driver or a generic document, don't run it through a presentation app blindly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a PRD file?
If it's a SoftMaker Presentations deck, open it in SoftMaker Presentations or the free FreeOffice (also Ashampoo Office). If it came from elsewhere it may be an old MS Word for DOS printer driver or a renamed document - match the tool to the source.
Is PRD a PowerPoint file?
No, but it's the same idea. SoftMaker Presentations .prd is a slide deck in SoftMaker's own format; open it in SoftMaker/FreeOffice and Save As .pptx to use it in PowerPoint.
How do I convert PRD to PPTX or PDF?
Open the .prd in SoftMaker Presentations (or free FreeOffice) and use Save As for PowerPoint .pptx, or Export/Print to PDF.
Is there a free way to open a SoftMaker PRD?
Yes - SoftMaker FreeOffice is a free edition for Windows, macOS and Linux that opens Presentations files and exports to PPTX/PDF.
My .prd isn't a presentation - what else could it be?
The extension is overloaded: old Microsoft Word for DOS used .prd for printer drivers, the Lode Runner game uses .prd data files, and people sometimes name a 'Product Requirements Document' .prd. Check where the file came from.
