.OTMU

OTMU File

Origin Unicode Matrix Template
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

An OTMU file is a matrix-book template created by OriginLab's Origin, the scientific graphing and data analysis application. It stores the layout of a matrixbook (sheet count, dimensions, data types, math functions and formatting) so you can reuse it, but it holds no actual data. Open or apply an OTMU file in Origin or OriginPro on Windows through File then Open, or by choosing it when creating a new matrix.

What is the OTMU file format?

An .otmu file is a matrix-book template used by Origin, the scientific graphing and data analysis program from OriginLab. It saves the design of a matrixbook so you can reuse the same setup for new data. Inside an .otmu file you get the number of matrixsheets, the sheet names, the matrix dimensions, the data type, math functions, data import-handling rules, and worksheet style and formatting. It does not store any of the actual matrix values.

OTMU stands for Origin Unicode Matrix Template. It is the UTF-8 version of the older .otm matrix template, added in Origin 2018. Because it is Unicode, it handles non-Latin characters in sheet names and comments that the legacy format could not. Origin 2018 and later write .otmu by default while still reading and writing .otm for backward compatibility.

Security & safety

RISK: LOW

OTMU is a proprietary Origin template that stores layout and formatting, not executable code. It can embed math functions and import instructions, so only open templates from sources you trust, but there is no common malware vector tied to the format.

NotesOTMU is the UTF-8 successor to the older OTM matrix template, added in Origin 2018. Origin 2018 and later read and write both formats, with the Unicode variant as the default. Matrix templates cannot be saved as analysis templates. Applying an OTMU template to imported data can produce OGMU matrix graphs.

Frequently asked questions

What program opens an OTMU file?
OriginLab Origin and OriginPro on Windows open OTMU files. Use File then Open and set the file type to Origin Template (.otmu), or select the template when creating a new matrixbook.
Why is there no data in my OTMU file?
That is expected. An OTMU stores only the matrixbook's structure and formatting (sheets, dimensions, data type, math functions, style). To keep the actual values, save an Origin project (.opju) instead.
What is the difference between OTM and OTMU?
Both are Origin matrix templates. OTMU is the UTF-8 Unicode version introduced with Origin 2018 and is the default in newer releases; OTM is the older format kept for backward compatibility with pre-2018 Origin.
Can I open an OTMU file without Origin?
Not in a supported way. The format is proprietary to Origin, and there is no free third-party viewer that reads matrix templates correctly. A free Origin trial from OriginLab is the practical route.
How do I create an OTMU file?
In Origin, set up a matrixbook the way you want, then right-click its title bar or use File then Save Template As and save with the .otmu file type.
Does OTMU work on Mac or Linux?
Origin is a Windows application, so OTMU handling is Windows-only. On other systems you would run Origin through a Windows virtual machine or compatibility layer.
