What is the NCD file format?
.ncd files are associated with NTI CD-Maker, a disc burning and compilation application developed by NTI Corporation (NewTech Infosystems). Note that the .ncd extension is also used by Nero CoverDesigner for a separate, unrelated purpose - cover and label design rather than burn project data.
Project data is stored in .ncd files, including the source file and folder list, disc label, track order, and burn settings needed to assemble a CD or DVD. Unlike a standard ISO image, an .ncd project describes what should be burned rather than embedding raw disc sectors; the actual burn is performed when NTI CD-Maker processes the layout file.
The format is a proprietary binary container with little-endian byte order and no publicly documented magic-byte signature, so reliable identification requires the originating NTI software rather than a file header check.
NTI later rebranded CD-Maker as NTI Media Maker and eventually exited the consumer burning market, making .ncd effectively a legacy format. Tools such as IsoBuster and ImgBurn may still handle .ncd project data to varying degrees.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWAn .ncd project file is data, not an executable, and on its own carries little risk. The practical caution is software-related: NTI CD-Maker is old, unmaintained consumer software, so download installers only from NTI's official site or trusted archives and prefer a modern, maintained burner (ImgBurn, CDBurnerXP) for new discs. Beware "free .ncd opener" download portals, which commonly bundle adware/PUPs.
Format details
in a nutshell- NetCDF data file - Some scientific tools use .ncd for NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) array data; unrelated to disc burning.
- Norton Change Directory - Old Norton Utilities/PC Tools stored directory-navigation data in .ncd files on DOS systems.
- Nero CD-ROM layout (rare) - Occasionally cited as a Nero compilation/layout file; Nero's native compilation extension is .nra/.nrg in practice.

Technical details
deep spec| Developer | NTI Corporation (NewTech Infosystems) |
| Format type | Proprietary binary CD/DVD compilation and burn-layout project file |
| Byte order | Little-endian |
| Compression | None - source files referenced or embedded without compression |
| File signature | No publicly documented magic bytes; identified by originating NTI software, not a fixed header |
| MIME type | application/octet-stream (no dedicated registered type) |
| Typical file size | A few KB (layout-only) up to ~700 MB (CD) or ~4.7 GB (DVD) if disc data is embedded |
| Stored project data | Source file and folder list, disc label, track order, burn settings, and optional embedded disc content |
| Target media | CD-ROM (up to ~700 MB) and DVD (up to 4.7 GB single-layer) |
| Burned file system | ISO-9660 and/or Joliet, as configured in the NTI project |
| Platform | Windows only |
| Successor | NTI Media Maker; standard ISO images became the replacement for disc-archiving workflows |
| Extension collision | The .ncd extension is also used by Nero CoverDesigner for disc label/cover projects - a completely different format |
| Legacy status | Effectively obsolete; NTI exited the consumer disc-burning market, making .ncd files difficult to open without legacy software |
| Released | Late 1990s (NTI CD-Maker era) |
