What is the MSCZ file format?
The .mscz format is the native compressed score format used by MuseScore, a cross-platform application for composing, editing, and printing music notation. Originally developed by Werner Schweer and now maintained by MuseScore BVBA (part of Muse Group), it stores a complete sheet-music document including composition data, instrument information, time and key signatures, notes, dynamics, and lyrics. A .mscz file can also hold metadata such as composer name, title, copyright notice, and other score details.
The .mscz format uses the ZIP compression algorithm - its files begin with the magic bytes 50 4B 03 04, the standard PK signature found in all ZIP archives. Unpacking a .mscz reveals its internal structure:
- an uncompressed .mscx XML score file containing the actual notation data
- a
container.xmlmanifest listing the archive contents - a thumbnail preview of the first page
- any embedded images or audio files
The .mscx sibling format carries the same XML notation data without any compression. An older .msc format was used by MuseScore version 0.9.4 and earlier. In essence, .mscz is a compressed version of the .mscx file that can also contain images and other embedded resources. Thanks to compression, .mscz files are small in size yet fully functional - MuseScore opens them directly without any manual extraction.
Scores saved as .mscz can be exported to MusicXML for use in other notation software, or rendered to PDF and MIDI for printing and playback. The format's MIME type is application/x-musescore.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWAn .mscz is a notation document (a ZIP of XML) with no executable code, so it is safe to open. As with any ZIP-based format it could in theory bundle embedded files, but practical risk is negligible - download scores from musescore.com or trusted sources and use the official MuseScore app from musescore.org rather than no-name "MSCZ viewers".
