.KMPROJECT

KMPROJECT File

KineMaster Project
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

A .kmproject file is the internal project file used by KineMaster, the mobile video editor for Android and iOS. It stores the edit layout, layer timing, effects and references to your video, audio and image clips, but not the media itself. You open it by launching KineMaster on the same device, where saved projects appear on the project list; there is no desktop program that reads it.

Identify a file

What is the KMPROJECT file format?

A .kmproject file is the project file used by KineMaster, a mobile video editor from KineMaster Corp. for Android and iOS. It holds the recipe for an edit: the timeline arrangement, the order and timing of layers, transitions, effects, text overlays and the settings you applied.

What it does not hold is the media. A .kmproject stores references to your video, audio and image files rather than the files themselves, which keeps it small, often just a few kilobytes to a few megabytes. Each project lives in its own folder next to the assets it points to. Because the media is external, moving or deleting a source clip leaves the project unable to load. That limitation is exactly why KineMaster 5.0 added the .kine package, which bundles the .kmproject together with every referenced file so a whole project can travel between devices.

Security & safety

RISK: LOW

A .kmproject is a passive project description file with no executable content. The main practical risk is broken projects: because it only references media, deleting or moving the source clips leaves the project unable to load. Files are only meaningful inside KineMaster.

Technical details

deep spec
EncodingBinary/structured proprietary container; internal layout not publicly documented
ContainerSingle project file stored inside a per-project folder alongside referenced media
CompressionNot documented
EncryptionNone documented
Typical sizeA few KB to a few MB, since only project metadata and asset references are stored, not the media
StructureHolds the edit decision list for a KineMaster project: timeline layout, layer order and timing, video, audio and image references, transitions, effects, text overlays and applied settings. Actual media is stored separately and only pointed to by path reference.
IntegrityNot documented
PlatformsAndroid, iOS
NotesBecause a .kmproject stores references rather than embedded media, moving, renaming or deleting the referenced source files breaks project loading. This is the problem the later .kine package format solved by bundling the .kmproject together with all its media.
Media TypeVideo editing project (non-linear editor)

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a .kmproject file on my phone?
Open the KineMaster app. Saved projects appear on the project list at launch, and tapping one loads its .kmproject. The file is not meant to be opened by tapping it in a file manager.
Can I open a .kmproject file on a Windows PC or Mac?
No. There is no verified desktop program that reads the proprietary .kmproject format. It only works inside the KineMaster mobile app on Android or iOS.
Why won't my .kmproject load or why is media missing?
The file stores references to your video, audio and image files rather than the media itself. If those source files were moved, renamed or deleted, KineMaster cannot rebuild the project. Restore the original media to fix it.
What is the difference between .kmproject and .kine?
.kmproject is the internal project file. .kine, introduced in KineMaster 5.0, is a package that wraps the .kmproject together with all its media so a whole project can be moved between devices.
How do I turn a .kmproject into a video?
Open the project in KineMaster and use Export to render the timeline to an .mp4 video. The project file itself is not a video and cannot be played directly.
How do I share a KineMaster project with someone else?
In KineMaster 5.0 or later, export the project as a .kine file. That package includes the .kmproject and every referenced asset, so the recipient can open the complete project.
