What is the INS file format?
An .ins file is most commonly a compiled InstallShield script used by legacy Windows software installers from the 1990s. InstallShield compiled human-readable .rul source files into a binary .ins bytecode - almost always named setup.ins - which the bundled setup.exe runtime executed during installation. The binary is not human-readable. Modern InstallShield (Flexera Software) uses .ism project files and produces .msi or .exe output; .ins is a 1990s legacy artifact.
Internet Settings files
The .ins extension is also used for Internet Connection Settings - an INI-style text format distributed by Internet Service Providers to configure Internet Explorer and dial-up connections automatically. These files can be launched directly from the Windows shell. However, attempting to run an .ins file downloaded from the internet will raise a warning due to security reasons and will be stopped by default. This can be circumvented by changing specific IE settings or by opening the file using a different tool.
