What is the FCP file format?
A .fcp file is a Final Cut Pro project file used by Apple’s professional video-editing application through version 7 (2009). The file stores all project metadata: sequence timelines, clip references (paths to external media), edit decision lists with in/out points, transitions, effects parameters, audio levels, chapter markers, and automation data. Importantly, .fcp files contain no embedded media - all video, audio, and graphics assets are stored externally and referenced by file path.
The format is a proprietary Apple binary structure, big-endian in byte order (a legacy of Final Cut Pro’s PowerPC Mac origins), and not publicly documented. File sizes are typically modest - 50 KB to 50 MB - reflecting metadata-only content. The format was used across FCP versions 1 (1999) through 7 (2009), with significant internal changes between major releases.
Final Cut Pro 7 was discontinued in 2011 when Apple launched Final Cut Pro X, which uses an incompatible .fcpxml interchange format and a .fcpproject bundle. Apple provided no direct upgrade path. The recommended migration workflow is to export an XML sequence from FCP 7, then import it into Final Cut Pro X using tools such as 7toX for Final Cut Pro, or convert to Premiere Pro format.
FCP 7 can still run on older macOS versions but is no longer sold or updated by Apple.
