What is the EDA file format?
Files with the .eda extension store disk images in Ensoniq ASR format - Advanced Sampling Recorder. EDA images are created and managed with Ensoniq Disk Tools software developed by Chicken Systems, for archiving and working with Ensoniq ASR-series sampler disks on modern computers. Similar disk images conforming to the EPS standard are saved with the .ede extension. Chicken Systems' tool allows users to save, load and format Ensoniq disks, as well as import WAVE or AIFF audio data for use on Ensoniq EPS, EPS 16-PLUS and ASR-10/88 devices.
Each EDA image begins with a 512-byte sparse-map header recording which data blocks contain non-zero content, avoiding storage of blank disk sectors. Up to 3,167 data blocks follow, which can hold:
- instruments
- banks
- sequences
- songs
- macro files
- effects
- system files
- backup copies
This format was compatible with many music editing programs, synthesizers and samplers of the 1990s. The Ensoniq Corporation was acquired by Creative Technology in 1998, and the .eda format is no longer in active development. To access EDA file data, Ensoniq Disk Tools from Chicken Systems remains the primary option; Awave Studio (FMJ Software) can also extract the audio samples stored within EDA images.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWEDA is a static binary disk image containing audio sample data and sequencer data - no executable code for a modern PC. Opening in Chicken Systems Disk Tools or Awave Studio is safe. The only risk is accidental overwrite of an irreplaceable vintage library if using the write mode of Disk Tools; keep backups.
