What is the DBK file format?
The .dbk file format is used by OrCAD, a software package for creating schematics and designing printed circuit boards. A .dbk file is a backup copy generated automatically by OrCAD Capture, developed and maintained by Cadence Design Systems (which acquired OrCAD Inc. and now ships OrCAD as part of its Allegro / OrCAD X product line).
.dbk stores a backup of the main schematic design file (.dsn) created with the software. The file is a byte-for-byte copy of the .dsn design database, capturing schematic pages, parts, nets, hierarchy and design properties as they existed before the last save. It lives alongside the .opj project file that ties the OrCAD design together.
Because .dbk is a proprietary binary format mirroring the .dsn database directly, it is not meant to be opened or edited independently. Recovery is straightforward: rename the .dbk file back to .dsn, or point the accompanying .opj file at it, and OrCAD Capture will treat it as the active design. The main purpose of .dbk is restoring a previous state of the design after an unwanted change or file corruption.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .DBK is passive design data and cannot execute code. Keep it alongside its .DSN/.OPJ project so OrCAD can find related libraries on restore. Caution only around source: OrCAD designs can be valuable IP and a target for theft, so handle backups from unknown sources carefully. Do not trust 'free DBK viewers' from search ads - none genuinely open an OrCAD design; many are PUP/adware.
