What is the CED file format?
The .ced format is strictly related to JVC, as it was developed for AVCHD camcorders the company has deployed. What is important is that the function of .ced files is to store management and error-recovery data in case of problems with the memory card during recording (such as damage or improper removal).
.ced files are created by the internal firmware of JVC cameras and reside in the PRIVATE\JVC folder on the SD card. Unlike what the file's presence might suggest, .ced does not contain the actual video stream - that data lives in .MTS or .M2TS files within the PRIVATE\AVCHD tree. Depending on the nature of the error, the accompanying .MTS footage may still be partly or fully recoverable.
.ced files are proprietary to JVC, and there are no programs from other companies able to open or interpret this format directly. For playback or recovery of the actual footage, work with the companion .MTS files using a player such as VLC.
Hint
.ced files are often created when the memory card was not formatted properly - for example, if a card was formatted in a digital camera and then used in a JVC device. In order to avoid such errors, always format a memory card with the device that will be operating on it. This will provide higher compatibility of data storage.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA JVC .ced is harmless management data; the real risk is user error - deleting .ced or shuffling the AVCHD folder structure on the card can stop the camera from recognizing clips. Copy the WHOLE AVCHD folder tree when archiving footage, and don't rely on 'CED to video' converter sites (there is no video inside, and many such sites bundle PUP).
