What is the XLA file format?
.xla is an add-in file associated with Microsoft Excel, introduced in the Excel 97 era as the standard mechanism for packaging reusable macros and custom worksheet functions. Like .xls workbooks, .xla uses the OLE2 Compound File Binary (CFB) container format - identified by the D0 CF 11 E0 magic bytes at the start of the file - and as such cannot be opened or read meaningfully in a plain text editor.
Internally, an .xla file is essentially a BIFF8 workbook flagged as an add-in, with an embedded VBA project that runs automatically when Excel loads the file. An .xla add-in can be an official Excel extension created by Microsoft or a custom, user-created file. Add-ins are typically built for a specific Excel version and may expose new menu commands, worksheet functions, or formatting tools.
Users who frequently work in Excel quickly arrive at the conclusion that additional features to make work easier and more streamlined are more than welcome. Good examples are additional time and date utilities or a spreadsheet format converter. Unlike standalone macro files, .xla add-ins load silently at startup without adding visible sheets to any open workbook.
.xla files are more structured than raw macro scripts, yet they still carry security risks because they contain executable VBA code. Unverified .xla files should not be opened. Some .xla add-ins also have limitations regarding number of activations or require additional software to function correctly. Since Excel 2007, .xla has been superseded by .xlam, which uses a ZIP-based Open XML package rather than the legacy binary container; modern Excel versions can still load .xla files but the format is considered legacy.

RISK: HIGHAn XLA is executable code: loading it runs its VBA in Excel with your privileges, so a malicious or tampered add-in can do real harm (the same threat class as macro-laden .xlsm/ .xlam, and a known malware vector). Load XLA add-ins only from sources you trust and have verified. Modern Office blocks macros in files marked as coming from the internet (Mark of the Web) by default - keep that protection on; if Excel warns or disables the add-in, don't override it for unsolicited files. Many organisations block add-in formats at the gateway. Inspect unfamiliar add-ins in the VBA editor (Alt+F11) before enabling, if the project isn't password-locked.
