VVD File

A file with the .VVD extension stores a three-dimensional image of an element created by a 3D Vivid Minolta scanner in a proprietary format. The 3D image is created by assembling multiple scans conducted by the device into a single three-dimensional mesh. The file format was developed to meet the needs of 3D scanners by Minolta, but it is also supported by software from other companies.

Creation of 3D Image Files in VVD Format

Creating VVD files that contain 3D model elements is a complex, multi-stage process. It is based on the following steps:

1. Performing multiple scans of the object using a 3D scanner, for example, Vivid 910.
2. Assembling the scans into a single entity.
3. Generating a precise mesh that illustrates the object.
4. Saving the element to a file.

Scanning is performed on a Vivid laser scanner and saved on a memory medium in the device or directly on a computer connected by a parallel SCSI-II data bus. Interchangeable lenses, a rotating base, and other scanner accessories can also be used for precise scan creation.

Handling Files with the VVD Extension

.VVD file models can be managed using Minolta's Polygon Editing Tool, abbreviated as PET. A project may contain many elements, as well as scenes loaded from a file with the .SCN extension. Unlike an element, a scene contains information about the view - zoom settings, direction, viewing mode. VVD element files can be saved independently during editing, and also exported to other popular 3D model formats - DXF, Wavefront, Softimage, VRML 2.0, STL, MGF.
