What is the UPF file format?
.upf is a proprietary image format produced by Nokia camera-equipped feature phones in the early 2000s. Photos captured on these devices were stored internally and transferred to a PC using Nokia Suite (formerly Nokia PC Suite), the only widely available desktop application capable of managing the format.
Nokia has not published a format specification. The internal structure is believed to wrap JPEG data inside a custom Nokia header carrying device metadata - capture date, handset model, and location data on supported devices. Resolution was typically capped at 640×480 or lower, reflecting the hardware limits of early Nokia camera modules, with 24-bit RGB color.
The format is now effectively extinct. Nokia Suite has been discontinued, and HMD Global - the company licensing the Nokia brand for modern Android phones - produces all photos in standard JPEG or HEIF. Users who encounter .upf files from old devices sometimes recover the images by renaming the file to .jpg, which works when the underlying payload is plain JPEG; IrfanView can then open the renamed file.
No magic byte signature, MIME type registration, or format documentation has been released by Nokia.
