What is the SIMS3PACK file format?
A .sims3pack file is a data package file native to The Sims 3 computer game, developed by Electronic Arts and Maxis. It is created by compiling multiple data files into a single archive file. Each package can contain additional custom content for the base game or its expansions - .sims3pack files can hold clothing, buildings, furniture, objects, emblems, Sim characters, and full custom Worlds.
Unlike loose .package files placed directly in the Mods/Packages folder, .sims3pack is EA's intended distributable format. Content from the EA Store and third-party sites is typically distributed this way and installed through the Sims 3 Launcher, which unpacks assets into the DCCache and DCBackup folders.
Internally, .sims3pack uses the DBPF (Database Packed File) container - identified by the DBPF magic bytes (44 42 50 46) at offset 0 - the same Maxis archive format as .package, but wrapped with additional Launcher install metadata. Individual resources inside may be compressed using RefPack/QFS compression.
Creating and adding .sims3pack files to the game
A .sims3pack package can be created by any user using a dedicated third-party package editor for The Sims 3, such as s3pe. To import content, open the file and the content will be available next time the game is run. Many users also extract the DBPF payload and convert .sims3pack to .package using tools like Sims3Pack Multi-Extracter to avoid the slower, Launcher-managed install process.
