What is the SDV file format?
.sdv is a project file format used by Pinnacle Studio for DV (Digital Video) camcorder-based editing workflows. Like most non-linear editing project formats, .sdv files do not contain video footage - they store timeline metadata referencing source media files located elsewhere on disk.
An .sdv file records the clip sequence, in/out trim points, transitions, titles, effects settings, and audio mix parameters for a Pinnacle Studio project. It stores file paths pointing to the source DV footage and audio files. Moving or renaming source media after saving the project breaks those links, preventing the timeline from loading correctly.
The format was introduced in the early 2000s when DV camcorders were the dominant consumer video source. Pinnacle Systems was acquired by Avid in 2005 and later sold to Corel in 2012; Pinnacle Studio is now a Corel product. The .sdv format coexists with the newer .stu project format in more recent Pinnacle Studio versions, with .sdv being the legacy DV-era variant.
.sdv files from older Pinnacle Studio versions may not open in Pinnacle Studio 20 or later without a migration step. There is no documented export path to other NLE project formats such as .prproj (Adobe Premiere Pro).
Security & safety
RISK: LOWSDV files are video project metadata files with no executable content. Risk is very low. Be aware that a file named with .sdv could also be a Stardew Valley save file (game data); if you are not a Pinnacle Studio user, the file may be unrelated to video editing.
Format details
in a nutshell- Stardew Valley Save Data (SDV) - Stardew Valley (popular indie game) uses .sdv as the save file extension; completely unrelated to Pinnacle Studio video editing.
