What is the RDL file format?
.rdl files are Report Definition Language files used by Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to define the complete layout, data sources, queries, and formatting of a paginated report. The format is plain XML, making .rdl files human-readable and editable in any text editor.
The root <Report> element carries an xmlns namespace URL that encodes the RDL schema version: common values include 2005/01, 2008/01, 2010/01, and 2016/01 (current, used with SQL Server 2016 through 2022). This lets SSRS detect the feature set the report was designed for.
Inside an .rdl file, <DataSources> and <DataSets> elements define database connections and queries - typically T-SQL against SQL Server, though SSRS also supports Oracle, OData, and other providers. The <Body> element contains <ReportItems>: Tablix grids, charts, textboxes, images, and subreport references. The <Page> element controls paper size, margins, and orientation for rendered output.
Reports are authored in Microsoft Report Builder (a free standalone tool) or in Visual Studio via SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). The SSRS web portal renders reports to PDF, Excel, Word, CSV, and other formats on demand or on a schedule.
A related extension, .rdlc, is a client-side variant used in Windows Forms and ASP.NET projects, where data binding is handled in application code rather than declared inside the report file. Power BI Report Server hosts .rdl reports alongside .pbix Power BI files on a unified on-premises platform.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWRDL is XML text; no executable code embedded directly. However, an RDL file can contain connection strings with embedded credentials or reference malicious data sources - review DataSources before running against an unknown server.
