What is the PSF file format?
The .psf extension is the native project format for ArcSoft PhotoStudio, a consumer photo editor developed by ArcSoft, Inc. that became widely distributed in the late 1990s and 2000s through bundling with scanners, webcams, and printers.
A .psf file stores a complete raster image in a closed proprietary binary format, preserving multiple editable layers along with per-layer settings - making it functionally analogous to Adobe Photoshop's .PSD, though the two formats are incompatible. Because the format specification is not publicly documented, no known magic byte signature exists; files are identified by their association with the PhotoStudio application rather than by a file header.
File size varies from a few hundred kilobytes to tens of megabytes depending on image dimensions and the number of layers. Color depth reaches up to 24-bit RGB or 32-bit with an alpha channel.
To use a .psf image in other applications, open it in ArcSoft PhotoStudio and export or flatten it to a standard interchange format such as .JPG, .PNG, or .TIF. XnView MP also provides limited viewing support on Windows.
Note: the .psf extension is shared by unrelated formats - including Adobe Photoshop proof-setup files and Linux/Unix PC Screen Font console font files - so context and the creating application determine which format a given .psf file actually is.
