What is the PDL file format?
.pdl is the proprietary project format created by Print Shop Deluxe, a desktop publishing application developed by Broderbund Software for designing greeting cards, banners, signs, and similar print projects. The format was introduced around 1992 with Print Shop Deluxe version 1 and was used through versions 1 to 4 (approximately 1992-1996).
Each .pdl file is a binary document storing the complete project state: layout, text content, embedded graphics, font references, and print settings. Community reports indicate that files begin with an ASCII header string such as PSDeluxe or PrintShopDeluxe. The format targets little-endian Windows environments (Windows 3.x, 95, 98) and has no documented encryption or compression.
Later Print Shop releases adopted different file extensions such as .pds, and the current Print Shop 23.x - still sold under the revived Broderbund brand - uses a newer project format with no support for legacy .pdl files. Broderbund went through multiple ownership changes (The Learning Company, Encore Software) before the brand was re-licensed.
Opening a .pdl file today requires Print Shop Deluxe III or an earlier version running inside a Windows 95/98 virtual machine. There is no known modern importer or converter. Users needing to recover content should run the original software, export to a standard raster format such as BMP or TIFF, and work from those exported files.

RISK: LOWPDL files are passive project data. They cannot execute. Risk is negligible for files from personal archives; any file from unknown sources should be scanned as a general precaution.
