NVC File

Nero Vision Project File
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

An NVC file is a saved video-editing project from Nero's NeroVision (now Nero Video). It does not contain video -- it stores your timeline, menus, and chapters and points to the original clips on your disk. Open it with a current Nero suite; there is no way to open it without Nero installed. To get a playable file you must open the project in Nero Video and export or burn it.

What is the NVC file format?

NVC files are associated with NeroVision Express, a multimedia authoring application developed by Nero AG. Rather than containing finished video, an .nvc file is a project file that stores edit decisions, timeline trim points, DVD menu layouts, chapter markers, and references to external source clips - the actual video data lives in separate files on disk.

NeroVision Express is a video authoring tool for the Windows platform. It offers tools for capturing footage, assembling video clips, designing movie menus, and applying transition effects. It also lets users create photo slideshows saved as .nvc projects. When a project is complete, NeroVision Express can burn the result directly to optical disc formats including:

  • DVD,
  • CD,
  • Blu-ray.

NeroVision Express versions 6.0 and later were included with the Nero authoring package. The format was carried forward into Nero Vision Xtra and the current Nero Video component of the Nero suite.

Because .nvc stores only references to source files, opening a project on a different machine - or after the source clips have been moved or deleted - will produce an empty or broken result. To obtain a playable video you must re-export or burn from within Nero Vision using the original source files.

Security & safety

RISK: LOW

An NVC is a small proprietary project file and is not executable, so direct risk is low. The main pitfall is data loss: deleting or moving the referenced source clips breaks the project. Beware generic 'NVC opener' or 'NVC to MP4 converter' download sites - they cannot really process Nero's proprietary project format and often bundle adware. Only Nero's own software opens it.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my .nvc file play as a video?
Because it isn't a video - it's a NeroVision editing project that only references your source clips. To get a playable file you must open it in Nero Vision and export/burn it.
How do I open an NVC file without Nero?
There is no practical alternative - the format is proprietary to Nero. You need a Nero suite with Nero Video/Vision installed, ideally a version close to the one that created the project.
Can I convert NVC to MP4?
Not by converting the file directly. Open the project in Nero Vision and export the timeline to MP4 (if your Nero version supports it). The output is re-rendered from the original clips.
My old NeroVision Express project won't open in new Nero - why?
Very old Express projects may not be fully compatible with much newer Nero versions. Try a Nero release closer to the original, and keep the source clips in their original folders.
I only have the .nvc, where's my video?
The video data was never inside the NVC - it stayed in the original source files. If those are gone, the project can't be rebuilt into a movie.
