What is the NPF file format?
An .npf file is a phonebook backup created by Samsung PC Studio, Samsung's desktop companion software for feature phones sold during the 2000s. It exports contacts, SMS messages, calendar entries, and MMS data from a connected Samsung device as a single backup archive.
Internally, .npf files use the Microsoft Access MDB (Jet Database Engine) format - the file begins with the standard Jet DB header bytes. This means an .npf file can be recovered by renaming it to .mdb and opening it in Microsoft Access or LibreOffice Base. Each table in the database corresponds to a data category: phonebook entries, SMS, calendar, and MMS records.
Samsung PC Studio was discontinued around 2012, replaced first by Samsung Kies and later by Samsung Smart Switch (which uses .sbu or ZIP-based archives). Contacts from modern Samsung Android devices sync via Google accounts or export as .vcf vCard files.
.npf files are exclusively a legacy artifact of the pre-Android Samsung feature-phone era. No currently maintained Samsung software supports them, but the MDB-compatible internal structure makes data extraction possible with general-purpose database tools.
