What is the NKI file format?
.nki files are associated with KONTAKT, a professional software sampler by Native Instruments. Also known as a *Kontakt patch* or *Kontakt preset*, an .nki file stores a complete instrument definition - mapping audio samples to key and velocity ranges, along with modulation routing, effects, scripting (KSP), and a GUI skin - rather than the audio samples themselves.
Files with the .nki extension reference external sample files such as .wav or .aiff, or embed them directly in a self-contained *monolith* variant. KONTAKT allows users to edit these instrument configurations and save them as .nki files.
Audio samples are used for creating music and audio tracks. KONTAKT-based instruments are commonly used in genres such as:

Security & safety
RISK: MEDIUMThe NKI itself is sample/instrument data, but it can carry KONTAKT Script (KSP) code that runs inside KONTAKT - generally benign UI logic, not OS-level malware. The real risks are piracy-related: 'cracked' or 'free' commercial KONTAKT libraries from torrent sites are a major vector for bundled malware in the installer/extras and may be illegal. Stick to libraries bought from NI or reputable developers and installed through Native Access. Beware fake 'NKI viewer/opener' downloads - there is no legitimate standalone NKI viewer; only KONTAKT opens these files.
