What is the IPK file format?
.ipk is the package file format used by opkg (Open PacKaGe Management), the standard package manager for embedded Linux systems including OpenWrt routers, Yocto Project builds, Entware (NAS and set-top boxes), LG webOS smart TVs, and Boot to Qt.
Structurally, an .ipk file is a Unix ar archive - identifiable by the !<arch> magic header at offset 0 - containing three members: debian-binary (the text 2.0), control.tar.gz (package metadata and install scripts), and data.tar.gz (the filesystem payload unpacked on the target device). This structure is identical to a Debian .deb package, making .ipk files fully unpackable with standard ar and tar commands.
The format originated in 2001 as ipkg (Itsy Package Manager) for iPAQ and Sharp Zaurus Linux handhelds. The opkg fork emerged around 2008 and is now maintained under the Yocto Project community.
Unlike modern .deb packages, .ipk files do not mandate cryptographic signing, though optional MD5 checksums may appear in the control archive. The format remains the deployment standard for resource-constrained embedded Linux systems where dpkg/apt would be too heavy.
Security & safety
RISK: MEDIUMIPK packages run pre/post-install shell scripts as root on the target device, so a malicious IPK can fully compromise the system. Only install from official package feeds (OpenWrt packages, Entware) or trusted sources. Desktop PCs are not at risk from merely inspecting IPK contents with an archive manager.
Format details
in a nutshell- Shana Informed Filler form package - Legacy Windows forms software by Shana Corporation used .ipk for form packages - discontinued, website now belongs to BC government.
- iOS/iPhone firmware package (rare) - Some early jailbreak tools used .ipk for Cydia packages (also opkg-based on Darwin).
