What is the FW file format?
A .fw file is a Framework document - an integrated-office workspace file created by Framework, the pioneering suite originally developed by Ashton-Tate and now maintained by Selections & Functions, Inc. Framework debuted in 1984 as one of the first programs to combine a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and outline into a single application, centred on a nestable container called a frame.
A single .fw file can contain one or more frames, each holding a different content type:
- a text document (paragraph-based word processing)
- a spreadsheet (cells, values, and formulas)
- a database table (fielded records, sortable and queryable within Framework)
- an outline node
Frames can be freely nested inside one another, so an entire multi-component workspace - tables, spreadsheets, and documents cross-referencing each other - can be saved as one .fw file. Embedded automation scripts written in FRED (Framework's built-in macro and programming language) may also reside inside the file.
The format is proprietary binary with no published specification or documented magic bytes; Framework is effectively the only application that can reliably open and save these files. The .fw family spans version-specific variants - .fw2, .fw3, and .fw4 - tied to successive Framework releases; a newer file saved in a later version may not open in an older one.
Note: the .fw extension is also used, unrelatedly, for device firmware images and Adobe Fireworks graphics - those are entirely separate formats.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA Framework .fw is legacy document data and inert on modern systems; it can embed FRED scripts, so apply normal caution with files from unknown sources, but the realistic problem is access, not malware - the format is obsolete and tied to one niche program. Get Framework only from framework.com; avoid generic "FW file opener" sites, which often bundle adware.
