What is the EPR file format?
An .epr file is a compiled external procedure object used by Actuate e.Report Designer Professional (ERDP), a now-legacy enterprise reporting platform. It encapsulates a callable procedure or function that can be referenced during report design, functioning like a compiled library module within the Actuate report framework.
The format is proprietary and binary, with no public specification. .epr files are analogous to other compiled Actuate objects such as .rod (report object design), .rox, .rol, and .roi files - all components of the ERDP ecosystem. File size is typically small, ranging from under 1 KB up to about 500 KB.
Actuate Corporation was acquired by OpenText in January 2015, and the product line was rebranded under OpenText Analytics Studio. Active development of the original ERDP toolset has ceased, making .epr files legacy artifacts found mainly in long-running enterprise reporting deployments that have not yet migrated. The open-source Eclipse BIRT engine, which shares lineage with Actuate's technology, is the closest active successor.
.epr files are only meaningful within the Actuate/OpenText ERDP environment and cannot be opened by general-purpose tools.
