What is the CAMREC file format?
A .camrec file is a proprietary screen recording container created by Camtasia Studio (versions 1.0 through 8.3) from TechSmith Corporation. It captures everything recorded during a session: screen video, microphone and system audio, cursor movement and click events, and cursor image bitmaps.
Internally, .camrec uses the Microsoft OLE2 Compound File Binary Format as its outer container - the same wrapper used by legacy .doc, .xls, and .ppt files - identified by the 8-byte signature D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Inside, TechSmith embeds a set of proprietary streams: Screen_Stream.avi (screen video encoded with the TSCC lossless codec), one or more audio streams, a cursor event log (Events.dat), cursor icon images (cursor-N.ico), and an XML manifest (manifest.camxml).
Starting with Camtasia Studio 8.4 in 2014, TechSmith replaced .camrec with the .trec format, which uses H.264/MPEG-4 video and is more efficient for high-resolution recordings. Camtasia 2020 and later versions dropped .camrec support entirely.
To work with a legacy .camrec file today, Camtasia 2019 or Camtasia Studio 8.x is required to open and export the recording to a modern format. FFmpeg can decode the TSCC video codec; 7-Zip can browse the OLE2 compound structure for stream inspection.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWCAMREC files are TechSmith proprietary recording containers; they pose no intrinsic execution risk. The main practical risk is data loss from attempted manual extraction of streams without the TSCC codec, which will produce unplayable output.

Paid Open the .camrec in Camtasia 2019 or earlier. To preserve the recording for modern Camtasia, go to Share > Local File > MP4, produce to video, then import the MP4 into Camtasia 2020 or later. Camtasia 2020+ will NOT open .camrec files.
Camtasia Player (legacy)
Free TechSmith released a free Camtasia Player for Windows that could play .camrec files without the full Camtasia Studio install. This tool is discontinued and not available from TechSmith; the full Camtasia 2019 is the practical alternative. Technical details
