What is the BIF file format?
A .bif file is a BIFF archive - the primary resource container used in BioWare's Infinity Engine games (*Baldur's Gate*, *Baldur's Gate II*, *Icewind Dale*, *Planescape: Torment*) and later in the Aurora Engine (*Neverwinter Nights*). Every game resource - area layouts, 2DA tables, scripts, textures, sounds - is packed inside one or more .bif files on the game disc or installation.
.bif files never work alone. They are always paired with a .key index file that maps resource names and numeric type codes to their containing BIF and byte offset. The .key is the catalog; the .bif files are the shelves. Resource types are identified by numeric codes rather than extensions: 0x0003 = TGA texture, 0x0004 = WAV audio, 0x03ED = area file.
The format uses a compact 20-byte header followed by a file-entry table and raw data blocks. BIF V1 stores resources uncompressed; the compressed variant BIFCV1.0 applies zlib compression per entry. The Aurora Engine introduced KEY BIF V1.1 with minor structural changes for *Neverwinter Nights*.
.bif files can be inspected and extracted with tools such as NearInfinity, WinBIF, or BIFRip. The format was superseded by ERF (Encapsulated Resource File) in *Dragon Age: Origins* and *Neverwinter Nights 2*. Note that .bif is also used by Roku for Base Index Frame thumbnail data - a completely unrelated format sharing only the extension.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWBIF files are passive data archives from game installations; they cannot execute and pose no meaningful risk. Modded BIF files from untrusted sources could contain altered game scripts, but not arbitrary code execution.
Format details
in a nutshell- TomTom Navigator Information File - Plain-text config/info file used by TomTom GPS devices storing map activation, credentials, or device settings.
- Roku Base Index Frames (BIF) - Binary image archive used by Roku streaming players to display thumbnail previews during video trick-play (fast-forward/rewind); entirely unrelated to BioWare format.
