What is the BA9 file format?
A .ba9 file is a backup copy of a 2019 tax return produced by the desktop edition of TaxAct. It mirrors the data in the main .ta9 return file, including federal IRS entries, state form data, and basic personal details such as the taxpayer's name and occupation. The point of the file is recovery: if the working return is deleted or becomes corrupt, the backup can rebuild it.
TaxAct creates these files two ways. You can make one by hand from the File menu, and the program also generates them automatically. The automatic system keeps three rolling copies in an AUTO-BACKUP folder, labeled current, daily, and weekly. The backup type shows up in the file name, so a file ending in .ta9_weekly.ba9 is the weekly copy. The final digit of the extension tracks the tax year, which is why 2017 returns back up to .ba7 and 2018 returns to .ba8.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .ba9 is a passive data backup with no executable code, so it cannot run on its own. The real concern is privacy: the file holds Social Security numbers, income figures, and other tax data, so store and transfer it securely. Only accept .ba9 files from trusted sources and restore them within TaxAct.
