Wat is het FILEBOLT-bestandsformaat?
Een .filebolt-bestand is een enkel bestand dat is versleuteld door Filebolt, een app voor bestandsbeveiliging van Envault Corporation Oy, een Fins bedrijf opgericht in 2007. Binnen de container bevindt zich één origineel bestand, zoals een .xlsx spreadsheet of een .jpg foto, versleuteld met AES-encryptie en vergrendeld achter een door de eigenaar gekozen wachtwoord.
Envault bouwde Filebolt op basis van encryptie-onderzoek van VTT, het Technisch Onderzoekscentrum van Finland. De app draaide op Windows, macOS, iOS en Android, en kon bestanden vergrendelen die op het apparaat zelf of in clouddiensten zoals Dropbox en Google Drive waren opgeslagen. Versleuteling vond lokaal plaats, zodat de cloudprovider alleen cijfertekst te zien kreeg. Envault verklaarde dat het de bestanden zelf nooit opsloeg, overdroeg of bekeek.
Een belangrijk detail: Filebolt is stopgezet. De apps en de website zijn niet langer beschikbaar, dus de meeste mensen die vandaag de dag een .filebolt-bestand tegenkomen, proberen hun eigen oudere documenten te herstellen.
Beveiliging & veiligheid
RISICO: LOWA .filebolt file is encrypted data, not executable code, so opening it will not run anything. The real risk is losing access: the Filebolt app and website are discontinued, and without the password plus a working copy of the app the contents cannot be recovered. Decrypt important files and store them in a supported format while you still can.
