Eine .filebolt-Datei ist eine einzelne Datei, die von Filebolt verschlüsselt wurde, einer Dateischutz-App der Envault Corporation Oy, einem 2007 gegründeten finnischen Unternehmen. Im Inneren des Containers befindet sich eine Originaldatei, wie eine .xlsx-Tabelle oder ein .jpg-Foto, die mit AES-Verschlüsselung unkenntlich gemacht und hinter einem vom Besitzer gewählten Passwort gesperrt wurde.
Envault baute Filebolt auf Verschlüsselungsforschung von VTT, dem Technischen Forschungszentrum Finnlands, auf. Die App lief unter Windows, macOS, iOS und Android und konnte Dateien sperren, die auf dem Gerät oder in Cloud-Diensten wie Dropbox und Google Drive gespeichert waren. Die Verschlüsselung erfolgte lokal, sodass der Cloud-Anbieter immer nur Chiffretext sah. Envault gab an, die Dateien selbst niemals gespeichert, übertragen oder eingesehen zu haben.

RISIKO: LOWA .filebolt file is encrypted data, not executable code, so opening it will not run anything. The real risk is losing access: the Filebolt app and website are discontinued, and without the password plus a working copy of the app the contents cannot be recovered. Decrypt important files and store them in a supported format while you still can.
