Um arquivo .filebolt é um arquivo único que foi criptografado pelo Filebolt, um aplicativo de proteção de arquivos da Envault Corporation Oy, uma empresa finlandesa fundada em 2007. Dentro do contêiner reside um arquivo original, como uma planilha .xlsx ou uma foto .jpg, codificado com criptografia AES e bloqueado por uma senha escolhida pelo proprietário.
A Envault construiu o Filebolt com base em pesquisas de criptografia do VTT, o Centro de Pesquisa Técnica da Finlândia. O aplicativo funcionava em Windows, macOS, iOS e Android, e podia bloquear arquivos armazenados no dispositivo ou dentro de serviços de nuvem como Dropbox e Google Drive. A criptografia ocorria localmente, de modo que o provedor de nuvem apenas via o texto cifrado. A Envault afirmava que nunca armazenava, transferia ou visualizava os arquivos em si.

The real risk is losing access: the Filebolt app and website are discontinued, and without the password plus a working copy of the app the contents cannot be recovered.
