Un archivo .filebolt es un archivo individual que ha sido cifrado por Filebolt, una aplicación de protección de archivos de Envault Corporation Oy, una empresa finlandesa fundada en 2007. Dentro del contenedor se encuentra un archivo original, como una hoja de cálculo .xlsx o una foto .jpg, codificado con cifrado AES y bloqueado tras una contraseña elegida por el propietario.
Envault construyó Filebolt basándose en la investigación de cifrado de VTT, el Centro de Investigación Técnica de Finlandia. La aplicación funcionaba en Windows, macOS, iOS y Android, y podía bloquear archivos almacenados en el dispositivo o dentro de servicios en la nube como Dropbox y Google Drive. The real risk is losing access: the Filebolt app and website are discontinued, and without the password plus a working copy of the app the contents cannot be recovered.
