Files with the ZIF extension contain raster images stored at more than one resolution, which allow for zooming. It enables the acceleration of the process by loading only the amount of data necessary to obtain the image at the desired resolution.

How ZIF Files Store Image Data

In addition, the file contains metadata, i.e., information about the file itself. This is how the arrangement of image elements is recorded, in order to create a cohesive whole.
